LABOR WELCOMES ANNOUNCEMENT OF C-17 GLOBEMASTER III
Labor welcomes the Abbott Government’s announcement today of the acquisition of two additional C-17 Globemaster III strategic airlift aircraft to further enhance our Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).
The former Labor Government successfully procured the two previous C-17’s, which have continued to add to our RAAF’s capabilities.
The C-17’s Air lift capability is able to be used for operational tasks, disaster relief and humanitarian assistance in our region and around the world.
Their capability has improved Australia’s reach not only locally, but regionally and globally.
Australia has previously deployed the C-17’s to Japan, during the aftermath of the Tsunami and nuclear reactor disaster and on very short notice to Sudan, to aid the humanitarian crisis.
They have also assisted in our aid to local communities in Queensland and Victoria after flooding and cyclones, and internationally through Operation Bring Them Home, assisting in the Ukraine, the search for MH370 off the West Australian coast, and most recently aiding in the Vanuatu Cyclone Appeal.
The C-17 currently supports Australian and Coalition forces in Afghanistan and the Middle East, providing a military long-range, strategic heavy airlift capability.
The reasoning behind this purchase should be clearly set out in the 2015 White Paper by the Abbott Government, and should clearly line up with our capability needs, including the need for a balanced force.
Labor looks forward to hearing how the Government plans to fund this $1 billion purchase as it is not listed in the current Defence Capability Plan.
