Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and the Australian Government have formally welcomed the Lausanne framework for Iran’s nuclear development.

Member for Melbourne Ports Michael Danby said, “When Ms Bishop is in Tehran next week, she should ask and evaluate the meaning of Iran’s persistent threats to eliminate the State of Israel.”

During the final days of the Lausanne negotiations, General Mohammad Reza Naqdi, the head of the Basij, reiterated his country’s ongoing commitment to the elimination of Israel. “Erasing Israel off the map” It was “non-negotiable”, he said.

Mr Danby said, “It is these persistent threats to destroy a sovereign state of eight million people that undermine belief in Western—including Australian—public opinion, that Iran’s nuclear program has a peaceful intent.”

Mr Danby said that he shared the concerns of former Secretaries of State Henry Kissinger and George Shultz and has written to that effect.
